Expansion of successful consolidation centre to new end-user types: Bond Street – London
Preferred supplier scheme
As part of the overall drive to reduce vehicle deliveries and associated noise and air pollution, New West End Company (NWEC) and Westminster City Council, supported by Arup, developed a waste consolidation scheme, which includes customer education encouraging the take-up of preferred waste collection suppliers and reducing the window and number of waste collection time bands.
The scheme is now up and running with 292 businesses opting in. It has proved difficult to find a site for a local CC due to the premium space and cost requirements in the close vicinity. Through the preferred supplier scheme the number of waste service providers has so far been reduced from 47 to 5, equal to a reduction of 76%. Vehicle movements have been reduced from 144 to 35 per day. The target is to reduce vehicle movements to 9 per day to achieve a total reduction of 93.7%.
One of the other benefits of this scheme was a 52% reduction in fly-tipped rubbish bags left on the street outside designated waste collection times – after just one month of improved customer education.
